Flora & Fauna

The Kimberley Coast has a diverse range of ecosystems from coral reefs to dense mangrove forests.  One of our guests remarked after a trip in 2010 that "He has never seen so much marine life in one area!"   The huge tidal range we have allows for exploration of benthic habitats at low tide that would normally go unnoticed unless you were diving.  A whole new world is revealed at low tide with a huge number of different corals, sponges, crabs, clams, sea cucumbers and sea urchins.  Other marine life such as dolphins, manta rays, dugongs and turtles reside in the warm waters of the Kimberley Coast.  Not only is there a diverse spectrum of organisms living in the sea, there are many different plant species the land, from delicate ferns in rainforest thickets, to Livistonia Palms further North.   The library aboard the Mahalo II is well stocked with natural history material relevant to our coast and is used frequently by guests to enhance their "eco experience" whilst on tour.
